image As a result of the extensive development of traditional methods of husbandry and production a modern poultry industry was created in Hungary, one that was able to attain a leading position in both domestic and international markets.

The Hungarian poultry industry is distinguished primarily by the fact that, in addition to large numbers of broiler poultry, all poultry breeds are almost equally represented within the structure of production. Significant quantities of all breeds are exported. Although it is modern, the Hungarian poultry industry continues to maintain its traditional character, in the sense that a number of Hungarian products which have been exported for many years (such as goose liver and various other trademark products) are still in considerable demand. The special effects of sunshine, the Hungarian landscape and countryside all contribute to the quality of the meat of Hungarian poultry, either directly or through Hungarian corn and other Hungarian feed varieties, resulting in far more delicious, flavoursome products than the average, even when the most advanced production methods are used. The intensive development and moderate industrialisation which were required in order to catch up with more highly developed countries did not cut the industry off from its natural resources. Hungary's topographical and natural resources, which at present compare favourably with human and animal population densities in Western countries, allowed the creation of alternative farming regimes on the widest scale. These are supported by a modern and concentrated system of food industry plants, in accordance with contemporary requirements, which ensures an output comprised of a much broader than average range of products. The Hungarian poultry industry rests on a solid base and is capable of improvement year after year.

In addition to its modern and concentrated food industry (slaughter and processor) base, other selling points of the Hungarian poultry industry include:

image - Safe production of biological foundations.
- Excellent genetic raw materials.
- Breeding traditions.
- Hungary's favourable topographical and geographical conditions.

The high levels of poultry consumption in Hungary and the demand of the local population for high quality products also act as catalysts, promoting a better product range and higher quality.

Of all animal husbandry sectors in Hungary the poultry industry has achieved the highest level of integration, with the potential to be developed into a global market.

According to the evidence of the most reliable international estimates, we live in a period of rapidly rising demand for poultry on a global scale. Demand is expected to exceed 70 million tonnes by the year 2000. In our opinion, the now partially privatised Hungarian poultry industry is capable of catching up with international competition in the course of Hungary's integration into the European Union. To this end, the Hungarian poultry industry is looking for international investors who are ready to become involved in the modernisation of an already existing capacity with a view to genuine integration. Utilisation of Hungary's potential would offer a wonderful opportunity to reduce currently rather high EU costs to an optimum level and consequently to enhance the competitiveness of European poultry as a whole.

We are delighted to have this opportunity to present the basics of breeding and production in the Hungarian poultry industry; the slaughter and production industry and its organisational structure; the most important Hungarian ventures in this sector; and, finally, to mention the wide range of products - manufactured under the strictest biòlogical and health safety requirements - which the industry is ready to supply in accordance with the needs of the customer.
