Hungary is a major egg manufacturer with an annual output of 3.4 billion eggs. The average number of layinghens is 14 million annually, of these 7-8 million are hybrid layers under intensive in-door husbandry. Of modern hybrid layers the most popular in Hungary are Tetra SL, the domestically bred brown hybrid layer, bred by B bolna Rt., which was founded over 200 years ago. TetraSL hybrid layer has also demonstrated its excellent qualities in 42 countries outside Hungary. The Hungarian consumer has a preference for brown eggs, consequently other imported hybrids also produce brown eggs. Shaver 579 grandparent stocks are imported annually. 
A white hybrid loyer is Shaver Starcross-288, which is again imported to Hungary as parent stock.Of birds raised for both eggs and meat, which constitute the ma jority of the hen stock, Tetra-H hybrid, New Hampshire and native breeds should be mentioned. Modern hybrid layers tend to be kept in 2 3 storey cages. The renovation of these and the gradual introduction of EU accommodation norms is now in progress. The largest farms produce 60 70 million eggs. The overall total is 1.5 billion eggs annually. At smaller farms hens produce eggs in a regime of several deep litters, slatted floors, and hen-roosts. The number of hens in these ranges from 100 to 1,000. Production output is estimated at 900 million eggs annually. Backyard poultry farming is very big in Hungary (amounting to approximately 1 billion eggs annually). This output goes primarily for the producers' own consumption, but any surplus is sold in traditional marketplaces. Smaller farms and backyards mostly still employ traditional farming methods, although alternative regimes based on these, as well as organic production methods, are now spreading. Close integration is not particularly strong in egg production, but breeders and baby-pullet traders co-ordinate their partners' operations by way of providing extension services and setting up associations. Egg Processing A relatively small proportion of the eggs produced are also processed in Hungary. At the same time, the facilities and hygienic conditions at the country's three egg processing plants meet the highest international standards. The largest processing plant has the capacity to manufacture 2,000 tonnes of powdered egg. The range of processing products includes liquid whole egg, separation of egg yolks and whites, and dried egg. Most of the dried egg is exported.
