| Research |
The successes of Hungarian poultry production owe a great deal to science and training: that is, to human resources. Research and development are conducted at specialist institutions and agricultural universities. The economic conditions of the poultry sector are dealt with by the Agr rgazdas gi Kutat˘ ‚s Informatikai Int‚zet (Agro-economic Research and Information Technology Institute), poultry diseases by the Veterinary University and the Veterinary Institute at the Hungarian National Academy of Science, the mechanisation of poultry farming and equipment by the Technical Institute at the Ministry of Agriculture, and processing by the University of Horticulture and Food. The centre for poultry genetics, breeding, farming technology and feeding is the Kis llatteny‚szt‚si ‚s Takarm nyoz si Kutat˘ Int‚zet (Research Institute for Small Animal Breeding and Feeding). In addition to the specialised research carried out in institutes, scientific work in the most diverse fields is conducted at the institutes of the Agricultural University of Debrecen, the Agricultural University of Godollo, the 'Pannon' Agricultural University and the University of Horticulture and Food, as well as at university college departments.
It should be mentioned here that underAct 114 of 1993 on Animal Husbandr,v only registered breeding animals and breeding stock can be sold in Hungary. Breed quality assurance is conducted by the Orsz gos Mez˘gazdas gi Minosit˘ Int‚zet (Hungarian Institute for Agricultural Quality Assurance) at its own quality inspection stations, with the involvement of agricultural universities and research institutes. This quality assurance scheme is designed to protect the interests of both breeders and breed users.Hungarian poultry science can boast internationally recognised achievements. The most outstanding work was conducted by Jozsef Marek on poultry leucosis, the disease that bears his name (Marek's Disease), and by Domokos Derzsy on viral infections in poultry. The work conducted at the Agricultural University of Godollo on goose breeding and the research carried out at Pannon Agricultural University on the uses of computer tomographs (CT) in poultry breeding should also be mentioned. Representatives of Hungarian poultry science are closely involved in the work of the international scientific community, primarily in that of the World Poultry Science Association. |
| Training and Education |
|
The Hungarian labour force is internationally recognised as competent and highly skilled in general, and this is certainly also the case within the poultry sector. A training system for those engaged in Hungarian poultry production, employees and executives, was designed and perfected to a high standard in full awareness that the quality of human resources is the key to economic success. A network of agricultural vocational secondary schools extending all over the country provides training towards qualifications in poultry breeding and poultry processing within the framework of specialised training courses in co-operation with large poultry breeding and poultry processing companies. Training focuses heavily on practical skills against a solid background of basic theoretical education. The skills learnt at college may be practised either in well-equipped training locations or on the premises of partner companies.
Chambers of commerce have elaborated a system of requirements for the acquisition of a 'mastership' qualification. Specialised higher education is conducted at the Agricultural Universities of Debrecen, Godollo and Pannon, the Veterinary University, the University of Horticulture and Food, and at university college departments.Knowledge acquired in the fields of poultry breeding and poultry processing may be deepened within the framework of postgraduate training. In Hungary, the relations between research and training on the one hand, and the productive sector on the other, are becoming closer, primarily in terms of the former improving its ability to meet the needs of the latter, but also in terms of the latter providing vitally important financing for research and training . |
| Extension Service |
|
Extension service is also an important component of training. In this connection, the leading role is played by the area extension service providers of integrator companies, but there are private extension service providers too, who are often experts at universities and research institutes. The costs of farmers using private extension service providers are refunded by the Hungarian Government. Without the joint work of producers, researchers, trainers and extension service providers, Hungarian poultry production could not have risen to its position of world leader. |
