Hungarian Poultry
Farming and Raw Material Production

The Background of Mea Production
Broiler chicken and turkey farming emerged as an activity carried out on an international scale in the early 1960s. Hungary joined this international farming integration from the very start and for nearly 40 years has remained committed to using the best possible breeding stock in view of its production conditions and markets. In addition to seeking long-term relationships, as a result of which long-term co-operative agreements with several multinational companies were made and maintained for over 30 years, it has been a constant aim to supply the poultry industry with the best farming stock and a sufficiently wide choice.

Breeds

In the broiler chicken sector the parent stock and the broiler chicks come exclusively from import farming stock. Arbor Acres, the farming company, and Bábolna Rt. as a joint venture, and the Ross company through He-Ross Kft. run grandparent programmes, while as far as day-old parent chicks are concerned Hungary receives regular supplies of Shaver Starbro and Redbro, Avian, Hybro, Cobb and IsaVedette. The market share of Arbor Acres is 60%, that of Ross 25%, the remainder being divided among the rest of the above listed breeds. Annual broiler chicken hatching totals 180-200 million chicks.

As far as turkey production is concerned, the day-old turkeys come from B.U.T. Big-6 parent stock, imported from Great Britain and Israel. Since production is increasing the import of incubator eggs is now required as well. The annual hatching is 8-9 million day-old turkeys.

The genetic base of Hungarian goose production was created primarily by Hungarian research and breeding. The variety of breeds is wide, including 10 table and 6 liver breeds and hybrids. Of the table type, the ma jor breeds are the Hortobágyi Fehér, Kolos Fehér, Bábolnai Emdeni, and Szentesi Nagy Fehér. Of the liver type, the main breeds are the Babati Májhibrid, Babati Szurke, Bábolnai Szurke Landesi and Kolos Szurke.

Regarding the duck sector, the traditional Peking-type ducks come partially from Hungarian and partially from imported breeding stock. Barbarie ducks are imported, while mullards come both from Hungarian and imported breeding stock. The most important duck breeds are the following: CherryValley (UK); Hungarian breeds such as the Hortobágyi Pekingi and Szarvasi K-94; of Barbary duck, the Barbarie St-4 Compact (France); and of mullard, the Delaco mullard (Hungary). The duck hatching yield is 10-12 million ducklings.

There are two breeds of guinea-fowl on the market, although both exist only in small numbers: the Hortobágyi Hl 5 hybrid and the Hortobágyi Kékesszürke guinea-fowl.
